Pablo from J&J Sports in Patchogue reported that the bluefish moved into the Patchogue Dock area with force. Fresh bunker was the best method to getting their interest but a big Super Strike or Yo-Zuri popper worked in the early morning has been getting plenty of strikes as well. Some stripers have moved into the river by the dock and those using those chunks again have found success in doing so. Smith Point Bridge also had a nice batch of stripers hanging out in its lights after dark to about 33 inches.

John at J&J Sports in Patchogue said action continues to entertain anglers. Trout, white perch and carp are all there for the taking. Locally, West Lake has plenty of brown and rainbow trout. Small lures or nightcrawlers will do fine. Head over to Carmans River for some pretty good white perch fishing. Drop a nightcrawler or dough ball down to the bottom and hold on to the rod. The drag will scream for a frisky fight from one of these freshwater giants.

John at J&J Sports in Patchogue said blues have started showing up at Patchogue's Mascot Dock. Patchogue locals reported a few fish in the 5 pound range, with bunker and mackerel chunks and poppers working well. Weakfish catches have also been reported by the Smith Point County Park Bridge and in the Narrows Bay area. Also, anglers are catching weakfish can be found near the Moses area of Great South Bay. Popular weakfish lures are small soft plastics and swimming plugs like the SP minnow, Redfins and Mag Darters and tins are all great choices. Anglers fishing for porgies also have a chance of hooking a nice weakfish. Try drifting a small pink rubber shad on a hi-lo rig tipped with a squid strip or a whole sandworm to score at this time of year. Weakfish are excellent table fare. The striped bass fishing has continued to get better in the eastern portion of Great South Bay. While most of the fish are varied in sizes, with keepers increasing in the mix. Swimming plugs and soft plastics continue to be very effective, with sandworms, fresh clams and chunks also accounting for the action. The early fluke season has rewarded anglers with some decent catches. The shop has gotten reports of keepers mixed in with shorts from Moriches and Fire Island. A squid and spearing combo or Gulp bait fished on a bucktail has been successful. For larger fish try using some whole small squid with larger spearing. There’s still time for flounder. If you’re in the Quogue Canal or Smith Point County Park Bridge area, it’s worth a try. A little clam or sand worm on a number 9 Chestertown hook is all you need… plus some chum.

He did also say the shorlines to the east, inside Bellport Bay have had a good shot of striper in the mornings and evenings on Super Strike Poppers, Cotton Cordells and Yo-Zuri Topknocks. John at J&J Sports in Patchogue said trout action at the lakes has been plenty full since the spring’s stocking. Trout have been fairly active on warmer days. Using small lures or worms and wax worm's with a float has been effective. Don’t overlook using a fly this time of year. As the days go on the weather will trigger a hatch that could make for a great bite.

Cole (from the shop) and his friends, Connor and Tommy fished the Fire Island area and had bass and blues. The fluke season opened on Saturday May 4th, and the bay bite was good. Porgy season is also open and they are taking clam, sand worms or squid in all the local haunts. Weakfish are starting to make an appearance in the bay. Some fish are being caught on sandworms drifted along the bottom as well as small soft plastics on a jig head. Bluefish have been reported in bays near the Smith Point Bridge Great South Bay and the inlet near Moses.
